Cuihua Mountain Geopark, Xi’an

Nestled within the Qinling Mountains south of Xi’an, Cuihua Geopark displays the remnants of a long ago earthquake that shaped the landscape. There are wind and ice caves to explore as well as the enchanting Heavenly Lake. If you are feeling fit you can ascend the 2,000 Cuiha Peak for stunning views of mist-covered mountains.

Crescent Lake, Dunhuang

The ancient Silk Road town of Dunhuang is located within an oasis of the Taklamakan Desert. It is famous for its singing sand dunes (Mingsha Shan) and crescent lake surrounded on all sides by desert. The nearby Mogao caves are another attraction with a system of over 400 temples carved into the rock.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is not a single entity but rather a collection of fortifications running across Northern China. The most well know sections of the wall were built during the Ming Dynasty between 1344 and 1644. The most accessible parts of the wall close to Beijing have been all but rebuilt but it’s still possible to find untouched sections, like in Dandong.

Where: Heibei, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi and more.

Sanhuang Village, Denfeng

Sanhuang is a village clinging to the side of Shaoshi Mountain close to the world-renowned Shaolin Temple (the birthplace of the Kung-Fu martial art). The trek to the village leads you along steep paths and up and down small crevasses cut into the rock. Waterfalls cascade down the mountain and you must cross a precipitous rope bridge before finally reaching the village.

Siguniangshan (Four Sisters Mountain)

Situated in the Aba Tibetan Autonomous region, Siguniangshan, or Four Sisters Mountain, is a 6,000m peak towering above three valleys and definitely one of the most beautiful places in China. Each valley represents a unique hiking opportunity and offers some of the most incredible views in China. The area gives the traveller a taste of nearby Tibet without needing to arrange an expensive tour and permits for Tibet proper.

Xingping Town

So scenic that it is featured on the 20 Yuan note, Xingping is a small settlement on the Li River 27km from Yangshuo, itself one of China’s most scenic destinations. Xingping is surrounded by towering karst mountains and moody landscapes that echo old watercolour paintings of China. You can even see the age old cormorant fisherman here.

Yuntaishan

One of China’s hidden wonders, the scenic area at Yuntaishan was formed by tectonic movements 23 million years ago. The resulting gorges, valleys, rivers and waterfalls create a unique environment perfect for exploring. There is also a beautiful Buddhist temple set at the foot of a mountain and if you’re lucky (or unlucky) you may spot the not so wild monkeys that inhabit the area.

Zhangjiajie

The scenery at Zhangjiajie is so otherworldly that it was used as the basis for the fictional Hallelujah Mountains in the sci-fi film Avatar. The tree-studded karst mountains rise up from the mist in impressive formation making it one of the most beautiful places in China. Here you will also find some “attractions” like glass bridges and walkways and the world’s highest outdoor elevator!

Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains

The Rainbow Mountains at the Zhangye Danxia Geopark are truly one of the wonders of China. There are four sets of viewing platforms located across the geopark offering stunning views out to this unique landform. Nearby Bingguo Geopark is also well worth a visit for its towering rock formations and sweeping views to the Altai Mountains in the distance.
